Junk food means کم غذائیت والی خوراک . there are several meanings of a word in Urdu. We write it as “kam gazaiyat wali khourak”.


Junk food means foods that are high in calories and contain low amounts of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. They are also called fast food. Fast food cannot be a part of a healthy diet because it only contains high energy and is low in nutrients.

It also contains high amounts of saturated fats and net carbs as well as simple sugars. 


The term junk food was first used by the American nutritionist Michael F. Jacobson in the 1950’s. It means all foods that are highly processed and have reduced nutritional value and are harmful to the health. Because it contains chemicals, dyes, refined sugar, and salt. The first fast food was American crackers Jack, which was sweet savory popcorn and peanuts. 

Synonyms Of Junk Food

There are several synonyms of junk food:

  • Fast foods 
  • Frozen foods 
  • Prepackaged foods 
  • Canned foods 
  • Convenience foods


There are several examples of junk food that are high in demand in the market. For example: 

  • Salted snack foods
  • Gums 
  • Candies 
  • Desserts 
  • Carbonated beverages like coca-cola 
  • Fried fast foods 
  • Burgers

Pizza is also sometimes categorised as junk food. It depends on the ingredients and baking method. 

Disadvantages Of Fast Food

Fast food is unhealthy for the body and it can cause several diseases. Some fast foods can be healthy like sandwiches because they contain bread, chicken, and salad. Sushi and salad are healthy forms of fast food. Many restaurants like Mcdonald’s and KFC sell fast food and their consumption is quite high in Europe and America. The disadvantages of fast or junk food are as follows:


Because it contains only a high amount of energy or calories and low nutrients, it can contribute to obesity. 22 grams of medium fried fries from Burger’s king contain 440 calories and 19 grams of medium fries from Mcdonald’s contain 380 calories which is equal to the calories of one large meal. So it can lead tto obesity which is the root of other problems.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Eating high amounts of junk food can cause gastrointestinal problems because it contains small amounts of dietary fiber. Dietary fiber is important for normal bowel movements. Without adequate fiber, the passing stool is difficult.  Moreover, they are highly processed foods that affect the digestibility of foods. You can use salty popcorn or a bowl of your favourite fruit which is high in dietary fiber. 

Cardiovascular Problems

Fast food or junk food is high in saturated fat which is also called bad fat. It increases cholesterol levels and can cause obstruction in arteries. It can lead to heart diseases like stroke or heart attack. Cutting down on saturated fat and doing the workout, can help to lower cholesterol. 

Tooth Decay

Carbonated beverages contain high amounts of sugars. For example, one can of coca cola contains about 9 teaspoons of sugar. Moreover, sweet desserts and candies are also high in sugar. A diet high in sugar causes damage to the toot enamels. Sugar attacks the tooth enamel and causes cavities and other dental problems.
